The modern candy cane came from the 17th century as straight sticks of sugar candy. The story goes that in 1670 the choirmaster of the Cologne Cathedral had the sugar sticks bent in the shape of a shepherds crook and gave them to children. It became a popular tradition and used of candy canes on trees appeared by the 1800’s and were still white. It wasn’t until the early 20th century stripes were added.
