Riegel is the oldest son and heir of Hans Riegel Sr. (April 3, 1893 - March 31, 1945), the founder of the Haribo confectionary company of Bonn. The company, whose name is an acronym for "Hans Riegel, Bonn," was started in 1920 and today is known worldwide for its licorice and jellied sweet desserts. To this day, the company's most profitable product remains the gummy bears.
