they just used insolated boxes to keep their ice frozen and their food cold. actually a man would stop by with big bags of ice asking you how many you would like to buy for your ice box because obviously they melt. kinda like a milk man. im not sure where he got the ice from in the first place though but i know that's where households used to get it from
