The fetus excretes urine into the amniotic fluid that surrounds it in the womb. Indeed fetal urine accounts for a major portion of this fluid. Since the fetus has no input into its digestive tract (other than swallowed amniotic fluid) there are no true feces to be pooped. The fetal intestines contain a sticky, sterile substance called meconium -- consisting mainly of epithelial cells, mucus, and various other bodily fluids. The baby's first bowel movement is meconium. When stressed during labor, the fetus can eliminate meconium into the amniotic fluid prior to birth, which can cause problems if inhaled into its lungs before taking its first breath of air.
