Since I'm from the US, and "playing gooseberry" is apparently a UK expression, I had never heard of it before. But I did look it up and the results of my search are in the link below.

when you're hanging out with more than one friend, and they have all the fun while you sit in the back disappearing. trust me, it's not nice. especially if you're hanging out with lovers. hope that helped. :)

Yeah well I am from the UK - basically it's applied to someone who is with a couple of people who maybe would prefer to be on their own, for the usual boy/girl reasons - for instance if you're out with your mate and he starts chatting someone up then you might find a reason to excuse yourself and leave so as not to "play the gooseberry" - maybe its too subtle for you Americans (only joking!)
