AnswerThe chip clip idea was thought up in 1980 by Jim Shaw. He sent the idea to Frito Lay.

He sent in a letter with the idea on it and later that year he got a letter back saying thanks for the idea now you use something Jim shaw thought up of one day.

George Welch, my father, was the first person awarded a patent for the chip clip. November 2, 1982. I have the original patient which was at the time called a bag closure device. It wasn't until later he named the device "Chip Clip", and discovered that someone was manufacturing the item patient pending. He sued that company, and for years received a percentage of the sales, quarterly.
