Because when sodium chloride is in a solid form it is in a lattice structure, this means the ions are fixed in place. If they can't move they can't carry the electrical current. When sodium chloride is in aqueous form the ions are free to move, therefore they can carry the current. Hope this helps :)

Why does aqueous sodium chloride conduct electricity but dry sodium chloride does not?

Aqueous sodium chloride contains dissociated ions which are free to move and conduct electricity. Dry sodium chloride does not conduct electricity because the ions are not free to move in a solid state.

Does sodium chloride conduct electricity in solution?

Yes, sodium chloride (table salt) conducts electricity when it is dissolved in water. This is because it dissociates into ions (sodium and chloride ions) in solution, which are able to carry electrical charge and allow the flow of electricity.

Is aqueous sodium chloride is a good conductor of electric current?

Yes, aqueous sodium chloride solution is a good conductor of electricity. Since, it is an ionic salt, when dissolved in water it dissociates into ions and thus the free ions conduct electricity.

Would a light bulb light up when placed in an aqueous solution of sodium chloride but not solid sodium chloride?

The light bulb would not light up when placed in a solid sodium chloride because the solid does not conduct electricity. However, in an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, the solution is able to conduct electricity due to the presence of free ions, allowing the light bulb to light up.

In what form does sodium chloride conduct electricity?

For a substance to conduct electricity, it must either have free electrons or have mobile ions. Since in solution NaCl dissociates into Na+ and Cl- ions, it is capable of conducting electricity. In other words, aqueous NaCl conducts electricity. Molten sodium chloride is also a good conductor.

Are there forms in which sodium chloride conducts electricity?

In order to conduct electricity, sodium chloride has to separate into its ionic forms (sodium ions and chloride ions). It does this in a water (aqueous) solution and also when in molten form, which is when heated above 801 °C.

Can solid sodium chloride conduct elcetricity?

Solid sodium chloride doesn't conduct electricity.

Is Sodium chloride do they conduct electric city?

Sodium Chloride solution (dissolved in water) conducts electricity, and molten Sodium Chloride conducts electricty, but dry crystal Sodium Chloride does not conduct electricity.

What does sodium chloride conduct?

Sodium chloride conduct electricity only when is as an electrolyte: in water solution or melted.

Does Sodium chloride solid conduct electricity?

Sodium chloride is not electrically conductive.

Why does a sodium chloride crystal not conduct electricity?

Solid sodium chloride is not an electrolyte.

Does sodium chloride conduct electricity in trichloromethane?
