Why do chickens dig holes?

The coop is more for our benefit than the chickens. They will nest and lay eggs wherever they can if they don't have the coop. We have bred them to nest in their boxes, but they don't have to.

It's not that hens like to lay eggs, but that this is the way they reproduce. In order to have a next generation, all birds must lay eggs. It's just that if you take a chicken's eggs away from her, she will continue to lay all year until she moults. That's good for us folks who like to include the incredible edible egg in our dietary menus.
