Many small predators are hunting grasshoppers. This can be other insects. It can be small mammals. A majority of grasshoppers are hunted and get eaten by birds.

The grasshopper looses one of its legs often so that it can escape a predator. A bird having a firm hold of a leg will often be satisfied with only the leg and the insect can hop around a little bit more with the remaining one.
