It may be rich in vitamin C but, apart from that, the humble kiwi fruit is not that good for you, it seems.

The exotic fruit could be linked to an alarming rise in conditions such as fatigue, eczema and migraines, scientists fear.

In fact, if you suffer from these ailments, you may want to remove the Chinese fruit from your shopping list, they say.

Kiwi can be linked to up to 40 conditions, said allergy specialist Yorktest Laboratories.

Its researchers took blood tests from more than 30,000 people and 17 per cent showed an allergic reaction to kiwi fruit.

The figure was up from 4.4 per cent of people who took the same test three years ago.

One scientist said: 'Kiwi fruit has been well recognised as a high problem for more than 20 years.

'Our tests show an alarming rise in potentially kiwi fruit-related illnesses.'

However, the side-effects are not harming sales.

Last year, £46million of kiwi fruit was shipped into Britain - up from £21.6million in 2002.
