Why is my goldfish going on the top of the aquarium?

The water has become de-oxygenated, do you have a little pump and pipe to put in the tank that will blow a steady stream of bubbles into the water ? You could also change the water, water driectly ROM the tap is not recommended as it may have chlorine or other checmicals in it.

A goldfish will go to the surface( or should I say the top layer of water closest to the surface which is highest in oxygen to breath because there are low O2 levels in your aquarium. An easy way to fix this is to add an aerator to your aquarium to raise the dissolved oxygen levels and greatly improve the health of your fish.

The most common reason for goldfish gasping for breath is bad water conditions. Are you following the basic rules of successfull fish keeping? The rules are :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water (a goldfish is a 10 inch fish) :- Every tank must have a permanentlyr unning 'cycled' filter. :- Every tank must have at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If you follow the above rules your fish will stand a chance of surviving. If you fail in any of them, I can guarantee that your fish will have constant health problems and will die sooner than they should.
it may have a respritory infection so check your tank but fish breathe hard so its probably nothing-im not a vet but i do have fish and my stepmom knows alot about animals

This is completely natural! Goldfish use their lungs to remove oxygen from the water and it's okay if they spit out bubbles, except while not eating, becuase they might get swim bladder disease.

I'm very sorry to hear that- for future reference though, the problem was probably in the swim-bladder, which can be caused either by infection or an internal parasite. Medication is readily available from most pet and aquatic shops, but needs to be administered promptly.
