The Cotyledon
A bean is a young seedling. What you see on the outside is the seed coat, but there is another inner layer surrounding the seed called the cotyledon. Inside the cotyledon is the young roots and stems that later become a plant. As the plant starts its journey of growth, the cotyledon becomes food because a plant in its first few days cannot collect its own food.
The first two leaves on a bean plant are called cotyledon leaves. These leaves are part of the seed embryo and are different in shape and function compared to the plant's true leaves which will develop later.
The two main parts of a germinating bean are the embryo and the cotyledon. The embryo contains the earliest stages of a plant's development, while the cotyledon stores nutrients and provides energy for the growing seedling.

The fleshy part of the seed is called the cotyledon. This is the part of the plant where food is stored. Some seeds have one cotyledon, for example corn, and other have two cotyledons, for example a lima bean.
