Sitting straight helps us remain alert. It is said that during meditation, when concentration is most important, a straight spine(the entire back up to the back of the nose!) is most helpful in keeping the free flow of energy through your chakras. Specially, when you are seated cross legged, sitting straight is the most stable and balanced position.

On a personal note, I feel that the more I slouch, the more I become disinterested, unless of course I just want to doze off and become tired soon. However, when I want to concentrate and study, when I sit straight, though it feels uncomfortable at first, it will get better soon and help me remain more alert. You can try it yourself. Its important that you focus on your work intently the whole time you sit straight. When you are not focusing, just take a break and stretch out and drink some water.
