Because of envy, various members of the Sanhedrin (the religious Jewish leadership of Israel in that day) falsely accused him of treason against Rome. Basically, they felt their position and prestige threatened by him. It was because of this charge he was found guilty in a joke kangaroo court, and as a result of being condemned for this charge, the Roman soldiers thought to mock him and inflict further suffering on Him by jamming a crown of thorns down on his head.
