In D.H. Lawrence's short story "The Rocking-Horse Winner," Paul arranges to give his mother his winnings by secretly betting on horse races. He uses his uncanny ability to predict winners while riding his rocking horse, which he believes brings him luck. Once he accumulates a significant amount of money, he intends to present it to her as a gift to alleviate her constant financial worries and gain her love and approval. However, his efforts ultimately lead to tragic consequences.
