Betting and trading are not the same as gambling.

In gambling the historical performance does not affect outcome although people try to use statistics to predict the outcome. Money gambled is lost in case the prediction goes wrong and the prediction has an end. Gambling typically involves games of chance.

Betting, on the other hand, could be gambling if factors that affect the outcome are not taken into consideration. Insider information can be very important here and are part of these "factors." Betting typically involves outcomes of sport events, such as football games or horse races.

When it comes to markets, day trading is essentially betting the price of a particular stock will move in a desired direction, whereas purchases one intends to keep for long periods of time represent much sounder investments, and are based on trust in the ability of management to make sound decisions affecting a company's profitability.
