Wanda Young Rogers. In fact, Bill himself (Smokey Robinson) intended it for her. He wanted to record her as a lead singer after her mostly doing background but there was no intention of her replacing Gladys Horton in that role. Wanda herself told me that and Martha Reeves verified it. When the record became a hit, Smokey began recording Rogers more often and she happened to be leading on the songs subsequently selected for release. Horton eventually would have been doing leads on singles again but left the group. Wanda told me there was never any decision about who would lead or any jealousy and, in fact, there was appreciation for two people sharing the task on stage so each got a rest.
