No. The passing grades are Acceptable (A), Exceeds Expectations (E), and Outstanding (O). However, Hogwarts does not use this grading system. Only the OWL and NEWT exams use this grading system, and although the teachers may mark the homework paper of an OWL or NEWT student using this method, it is generally not used in Hogwarts. Also, although an A is a pass, it is generally not a good enough mark for a student to continue a class the next year.

Sorry if this is a bit long, I tend to get carried away!

What is the grading system at Hogwarts?

In the first four years of study at Hogwarts, final exams are taken at the end of the year. If you pass your exams then you move ahead to the next year. It is very very very rare for anyone to not pass their exams in their first four years. In fifth year students take OWLs (Ordinary Wizarding Levels) How many OWLS you receive affects your career and which classes you take at the NEWT level.Grades and what they are equivalent to in US muggle school:Pass Grades;Outstanding = A = 90%+Exceeds Expectations = B = 80%+Acceptable = C = 70%+Fail Grades;Poor = D = 60%+Dreadful = F = >60%Troll = F = 0%?I don't know what they would be equivalent to in the British school system, I tried to look it up but was confused, how can you only get 50% but still pass?

Does this sentence clearly state its meaning The teacher returned the exams to the students without grades on them?

No. The sentence is ambigious in it's meaning. Although the reader might assume that the teacher returned exams that did not have grades marked upon them, the teacher could have been returning exams to students who were themselves not marked with grades.

What is PhDc?

A person who has completed all degree requirements towards a Doctor of Philosophy, but still lacks completion of the dissertation process. Also known as ABD (all but dissertation). In most institutions, this is not a recognized degree, but it is not uncommon for people to use either the PhDc or ABD (the latter is more common) to indicate their status. In most cases, this means successful completion of all coursework, passing grades on all comprehensive exams, passing grades on all foreign language exams, and approval of the dissertation prospectus.

What are the disadvantages to simply pass the exam?

There are no disadvantages to passing exams -- they improve your grades and help you learn how to take tests. If you are talking about some sort of exam where you need a higher score to get into a good college, the disadvantage to just getting a passing score would be that you won't get into a really good school.
