Robert Stephenson was one of George Stephenson's brothers; another was James. They were all concerned to greater or lesser extent in locomotive driving and construction in the verye arliest days of steam railways in the North east of England.

George also had a son Robert, who was as distinguished, if not more so, than his father, building the Britannia Tubular Bridge over the Menai Strait as part of his work in constructing the Chester and Holyhead Railway (1848).

Just to confuse matters, George had a nephew, George Robert Stephenson who was also a raiwlay engineer of repute.
