Nothing last forever, even stars. Stars are powered by nuclear fusion, which turns hydrogen into helium. As their supply of hydrogen in used up, they expand into red giants. Larger stars use up their fuel faster and only last a few million years. Stars such as the sun last for billions. After that the star's fate depends on the mass of the star. Low to medium mass stars shed their out layers, leaving behind a dense remnant called a whit dwarf. Massive stars explode in what is called a supernova, leaving behind an even denser remnant called a neutron star. The cores of the very largest stars collapse to become black holes.
