If by "he" you mean Sam, and by "them" you mean the orcs of Mordor after Frodo has been stabbed by the giant sider Shelob and put in a coma then kidnapped by the orcs, then here's the answer: they fought their way out. After Frodo was completely stripped of all clothing (and to the dismay of the orcs, not in possession of the one ring), Sam came after him. With Sting (Frodo's sword) and his own, Sam actually fought his way out of the tower before going back up the stairs to get Frodo. Then, he reveals to Frodo that while he was in a Shelob-induced coma, Sam himself pocketed to ring to keep it safe from the orcs and Uruk-hai. He returns the ring to Frodo and the two of them (disguised in small orc armor) continue their quest to destroy the ring in Mount Doom.

The main heroes are the Fellowhip of the Ring. This is made up of the 9 beings that agree to try to destroy the One Ring. (I say beings because they include Hobbits, Men, Elves, Dwarves and Wizards) The Hobbits in the Fellowship are called Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee (Sam), Peregrin Took (Pippin) and Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry). They are nearly half the size of a man but are very proud and will fight till the death. They fight with short swords but Frodo uses an Elven blade given to him by his cousin Bilbo Baggins. Sam is Frodo's best friend and nearly never leaves his side throughout the trilogy. The Dwarf is called Gimli. He uses a two-handed axe as a weapon and is a brilliant fighter. He is the son of Gloin. Gimli and Legolas have competitions in each battle they have against the enemy. Trying to beat each other by killing the most orcs/uruk-hai etc. The Elf is called Legolas. The main weapon he uses are his Bow & Arrow, which he is extraordinary at using and two Elven swords which he is also extremely skillful with. He befriends the Dwarf, Gimli after the triolgy puting aside their looks and differences and proving that Elf and Dwarf can work together. The Men are called Aragorn and Boromir. They use swords to fight. Boromir is the son of Denethor, the Stewart of Gondor who loves Boromir more than he does with his other son Faramir. Boromir is a brave fighter and proud of his heritage and of his home city, Gondor. Boromir leaves to join the Fellowship at the council of Elrond and swears to protect the Ring and the Ring bearer but is succumbed to the twisting influence of the Ring and tries to take it from Frodo. When the Uruk-Hai attack the Fellowship, led by Lurtz Boromir fights overwhelming forces to protect Merry and Pippen. He is sadly shot in the chest 3 times by arrows from Lurtz but tries to fight on despite his wounds. He dies in Aragons arms a brave and noble death to the end. Aragon blesses him and calls him a true son of Gondor. The other human is Aragon. He is the last decendent of the Kings of Gondor who falls in love with the Elf princess Arwen. He is afraid to take up the mantle of King because he is afraid of becoming like his decendents, each one corrupted by the Ring of Power. He witnesses the last moments of Boromir who fears that the end has truly come and that the Minis Tirith will fall. Aragon swears that the white city will not fall nor their people fail promising he will be King. Near the end of the third movie he becomes King and unites the people of Rohan and Gondor to fight the forces of Sauron outside the Black Gates. Lastly, but definitely not least, there is the wizard Gandalf. To fight, he uses his sword and his staff, which has magical powers. Without him the Fellowship would basically be nothing as he is extremely knowledgable and always knows what to do. As I said earlier, there are many heroes in the Lord of the Rings. These 9 are the main ones but there are lots more including King Théoden, Faramir (Boromir's brother) and Éomer. I'm glad you didn't also ask about the forces of evil as I would be here forever!
