Esteban Dorantes, originally a slave of African descent, became an explorer through his involvement in the Narváez expedition to Florida in 1527. After the expedition faced numerous hardships and shipwrecks, he was one of the few survivors, ultimately escaping from captivity among Native American tribes. His experiences allowed him to gain valuable knowledge about the region, leading to his later role as a guide and interpreter for Spanish explorers, including the famous journey with the Coronado expedition in search of the Seven Cities of Gold.
He is African-American, West Indian, Creole, and Portuguese Jewish ancestry.
