The most convincing answer I've found is that if you legally have your names hyphenated, you can use the hyphenated name or either or the names in just about any situation. So if your name is A B C, and your spouse's last name is D, you would legally change your name to A B (C-D or D-C). At that point, in almost every situation you could write/sign A B C, A B D, or A B (C-D or D-C). Still looking for an authoritative source, but I 've seen this in several "near-authoritative" places.
