On their descent from no higher than the Second Step, and 265 yards east of the First Step, in a howling blizzard, one of the two slipped and dragged the other down. Severely injured (probably a broken leg just above the ankle) Mallory attmpted to butt slide down the North Face.
His glissade sped up excessively and, pressing his ice ax into the snow harder to slow himself down, the ice ax kicked back and punctured his forehead, killing him instantly. A split second later he crashed into a rock that stopped his slide.

Tom puts together a great theory here, but we should be sure to point out that it is indeed a theory. Unfortunately, we do not know if Mallory and Irvine summitted on June 8th, 1924. I was part of the team who found Mallory's remains on Everest in 1999. We learned a great deal that year, and great scholars like Tom Holzel, Jochen Hemmleb, Pete Poston, and others have both uncovered amazing evidence and built solid theories on the duo's final demise. But, again, it is all theory.
In answer to your question...while we do not know if they were coming down from the SUMMIT or not, we do know that they were descending from whatever highpoint they attained that day. The reasoning is simple: Their teammate, Noel Odell, made a final sighting of the two at 12:50 PM atop a great rock step. There is a great deal of speculation about which rock step it was - the First or Second Step - but, regardless, we know they must have fallen below the First Step in order for Mallory's body to end up where we found it in 1999. Thus, they were indeed descending; the only question is from where.

two people thought they saw his body from a distance but they weren't sure.Irvine's body is a mystery .The story of Mallory and Irvine is they both got to the top together!but on the way down mallory sliped wich caused the rope to snap.so mallory sliped down the moutain.when he sliped mallory banged his head on a rock and broke his leg he put his other leg on top to protect.Mallory was unable to stand so sadly died after just half an hour.Irvine found mallorys body and carried on climbing down but also sadly died.9 years later some body found mallorys body, but the pictur of his wife was not in his pocket which he promised to place at the sumit,but the pictur was not on the sumit!it probly fell off.But Irvines body is still out on everest some were...

Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary are credited with the first official ascent of Everest in 1953 although in 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made an attempt at the final summit but never returned, hence leaving it an open question as to whether they were the first to reach the top. Mallory and Irvine were last seen high on the mountain but disappeared in the clouds. Mallory's body was found in 1999 at 8,155 m (26,755 ft) - about 700 m below the summit - on the North face but it is not known if he died while still trying to reach the summit, on the way down after reaching the summit, or on the way back down after abandoning the attempt on the summit. For years there was speculation as to which of the pair of Norgay and Hillary reached the summit first (which they perpetuated by insisting - accurately - that it was a "team effort"), but Norgay finally revealed that Hillary was the first, which Hillary later confirmed. The next team to reach the summit of Everest was Ernst Schmied and Jürg Marmet on May 23, 1956.
