Roy and Dale met in 1944, while filming a movie. Roy's second wife, Arline, died in 1946 October. Roy proposed to Dale a little over a year later, and the two were married at the end of 1947.

All accounts state that they did not become romantically involved till after Arline's death. Dale's autobiographies, which made no effort to hide her admitted failures (a 34 year old woman with three divorces in the 1940s was quite scandalous), was clear about this.
