Laura Ingalls Wilder said years later that the girl named Nellie Oleson in her books was really named Nellie Owens, although the name Genevieve Masters is very often mentioned, too. Nellie Oleson was actually based on three schoolmates from Laura Ingalls Wilder's childhood. Nellie Owens was the primary basis for the Nellie Oleson character. Like Nellie, she had a brother named Willie, and her family also ran a mercantile in Walnut Grove. It was from Genevieve Masters, the daughter of Walnut Grove's schoolteacher, that Nellie Oleson got her haughty attitude towards Laura. She was from was from New York, like Nellie. Stella Gilbert is the third girl Nellie Oleson was based on. Her mother was bedridden, and so Almanzo would take her along on buggy rides, producing a rivalry between her and Laura.
