D&D was actually based on a war game where players controlled armies. Gary Gygax created a medieval version where you had individual characters. He was influenced by Tolkien's work, but also by many other fantasy worlds like the Sword & Sorcery pulp fiction popular during that time.
According to Wikipedia, Lord of the Rings was written between 1937 to 1949, while Zork was made in 1977-79. Considering this means Zork was made 30 years later, I seriously doubt it.
