Describe a western style graveyard?

spooky, cold, scary Most Western graveyards are laid out with the graves aligned in an east-west direction, with the feet of the dead person facing east. This custom arose from Christian teachings which state that when the Lord returns to the earth to claim the dead in Christ that he will come from the east, and with a shout will call all the dead saints from the grave. At which time the saints will rise from the grave and face the Lord in the east. This is a very old Christian custom and I do not know if it is still being taught or practiced as it once was.

Why do orthodox synagogue face the east?

The ark (where the Torah is traditionally kept) in a synagogue is always positioned in such a way that worshippers face east, towards Jerusalem. This is because Jerusalem is the Holy City were the original Torah was kept in the sacred Temple before the Roman's destruction. Now all that is left is the Wailing/Western Wall. Thus, sanctuary seating plans in the Western world generally face the east, while those synagogues east of Israel face west.
