Basically, yes.
Inside the hilt (handle) of the lightsaber, plasma energy is created. It then passes through focusing crystals, and the blade pops out of an emitter. This is pure plasma energy. It is very hot - Several thousands of degrees. So, yes, it does cut through flesh by melting it.

∙ 11y agoUh... yeah THEY DO! Remember when Anakin's arm was cut off by Count Dooku? It hurt so bad that he was knocked unconscious for a couple minutes. And you don't bleed because the laser in the lightsaber fries up your blood vessels and arteries.
In a realistic sense, lightsabres might not actually hurt, because they destroy the nerve endings instantly, so no pain would be felt.
