Do you need a nunchuk for Lego Harry Potter years 1-4?

Ideally yes. The nunchuk has z and c buttons which are the force/operate stuff.

The wii remote still allows you to move around using the d pad and hit/shoot using the b trigger.

You can get away with 1 out of 2 people having a nunchuk. But you can't have none because you need to force stuff/get in vehicles/change characters. All of which the wii remote itself can't do.

Yes, you do. You don't have to have two, but you have to have at least one. When you come to a point when you both need to do a certain thing with the force at the same time, the person without a nunchuck needs to drop out. Press plus, (pause) and drop out. This is what me and my brother did when he didn't have a nunchuck until he got one for his birthday. :)

Yes, you need a nunchuk to move the characters around.
