Considering the Biblical overtones in the book, I believe the title is taken from The Bible:

Exodus 2:22 (King James Version)

22And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

But it could be taken from Jonathan Swift:

But a stranger in a strange land, he is no one: men know him not-and to know not is to care not for."

Jonathan Swift quotes (Irish Author and Satirist of prose, 1667-1745)
