Raphael not only allowed artists to speak out and express themselves in a new way - showing the world as it was for the first time. Real portraits etc. But he changed society by giving others courage to speak out. Peasants rebelled against kings etc. He lead the way in speaking your opinion and not following the crowd and conforming to socitey expectations. I'm doing an assignment on him and anyone that has any answers to my questions that would be a great help :) Q1. What was the background setting or context in which Raphael lived and worked? Q2. What were Raphaels achivements or contributions to the history of his time and to future generations. Q3. What was the cost of Raphael and his unique qualities and contributions? Q4. Reflecting on Raphael, how might he compare to someone who has contributed great things to the world in modern times? For Q4. I am doing Julian Beever and I am finding difficult to fin sufficent information on him all the websites have the same 4 lines on him. Thanks in advance :)
Raphael's greatest painting is probably the School of Athens which he painted in 1510 and into 1511.
"School of Athens"
In the painting by Raphael the two central figures are Plato and Aristotle. The painting is a collective portrait of all of the Greek Philosophers, some modeled after contemporaries of Raphael, such as Leonardo da Vinci (the Plato figure) and Michelangelo. See the link for a chart of who each figure represents.
There is no such famous painting. Raphael's School of Athens has Michelangelo in the middle, but no Leonardo.
Raphael Sanzio was a High Renaissance artist. He is mostly known for his Stanza della Segnatura frescoes and the School of Athens painting.

The theme of this painting is about commutation and learning.

Leonardo may be the model for Platon.
How can I know what niches you are talking about? Where are those? In the town hall of your home town? In the Parthenon temple in Athens?Or, may I make a bold guess? In Raphael's painting 'The School of Athens'.In that painting there are two niches with statues in the background. They are to the left Apollo and to the right Athena.
He painted the school of athens which is a painting that depicts an imaginary gathering of famous philosophers and scientists. for example it has Plato, Socrates, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and himself.
'The Scool of Athens' is a large mural by Raphael, in the Vatican. Leonardo has nothing whatsoever to do with it! On the other hand Michelangelo is in it. The rendition of Plato in the middle is also a likeness of Leonardo. Michelangelo Bounarotti is the one in the Magenta sitting by himself.
