Yes. The BBC do not generally hold public audition for the Serious Explorers Series, they usually select school from around the country, and offer opportunities for the students to apply. I was one of those applicants for the 2012 series but was unsuccessful.
Firstly you have to fill in a form saying why you want to be on the series, and if you are short listed from that you are then invited for audition which is filmed. After that, if successful, you have to complete another interview with the crew going on the expedition, and you are tested on an assault course.
