It depended on what part of America you lived in at the time... Northerners didn't see it as something bad but Southerners were outraged. This was shortly before the civil war and the topic of slavery and expansionism where the most widely debated topics and with those debates came lots of emotion. People in the North were angry that he was being prosecuted for acting out against slavery and people in the South wanted him in deep trouble.
