Many people knew that the One Ring existed, but they didn't know that Bilbo had it, except for Gollum. Gandalf suspected that Bilbo had the ring, but he wasn't sure.
Because the previous morning, Gandalf had "scratched a queer sign on the hobbit's beautiful green front door" as a sign so that the dwarves would know that Bilbo was the one he had chosen to go on their adventure with them. By knocking very hard on the mark with his staff, Gandalf put a dent in the wood over top of where the sign had been, erasing any evidence that it had been there. That way, Bilbo would not blame Gandalf for all of the dwarves coming to his house to take him on an adventure.
The Maia itself, known to us as Gandalf, is older than the world. In the shape of Gandalf he arrived in the Grey Havens in Middle-earth about the year 1000 of the Third Age. He is killed in that form on 25th January 3019 T.A., and returns to it on 14th February. Gandalf leaves Middle-earth in autumn 3021 T.A., and from then on nothing more is known about him. So we do not reliably know how long he keeps being bound to his "Gandalf" form, or which form he chooses to generally use.As you can see, we cannot say how long "Gandalf the White" lasted beyond the 2 1/2 years before he left. Unless you mean the "Gandalf" form overall, which would then be at least a thousand years, or the actual spirit/being regardless of form, which would be older then the created world/universe.
Oh of course its lying, its the first sign that the ring is taking control of its new bearer. Hobbits just don't normally know how to lie.
CHAPTER 5Problem: Bilbo must play a game with Gollum in order to get out of the mountain.Solved it: he wins the riddle game, guesses the ring's power, and makes it out of the mountain safely.Basically, he wakes up, finds a ring in the passageway, meets Gollum and makes a riddle game with Gollum. If Gollum loses, he has to lead Bilbo out. Otherwise, Bilbo gets eaten. Bilbo obviously wins, gets lead out, and finds out the ring's powers (put it on, and you turn invisible).
Frodo knows Gandalf because Gandalf was like Bilbo (Frodo's grand-uncle) guardian on Bilbo's adventures. Now, Frodo knows Gandalf through Bilbo.

They all look different They have different colored hoods.
We know Bilbo, the hobbit, was well guided and well guarded on his way home because Gandalf, the wizard, accompanied Bilbo all the way home to his hobbit-hole, while Beorn, the shape-shifter, accompanied him just until they approached his house in Mirkwood. Also because Beorn gives very good advice about Mirkwood.
I think it's because he know's his Uncle Bilbo is there. ---- Frodo doesn't know where Bilbo is. But if Gandalf tells him he has to take the One Ring to Rivendell where it would be save, before he is found in the Shire, what else should he do?Because he knows if he stays in the Shire the Ringwraiths will easily find him and kill him.
After Bilbo shut the door on Gandalf, the wizard scratched some runes on the door. It was an indication that a burglar or treasure hunter lived there. Once Gandalf came for the unexpected party, he removed the mark.

He says he has important things he has to attend to, though we don't really know if it's true or not.
Gandalf Three wizards played a direct part in The Lord of the Rings (movies and books): Gandalf the Gray (and later the white) Saruman the White (and we know what happened to him) Radagast the Brown -- birds, trees flowers were his specialty. Two others were mentioned obscurely. They were the Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando.
The cave was dry and unoccupied. What they didn't know was that it was the 'front door' for the goblins living in the mountain. The goblins discovered them and captured them, but not before Bilbo shouted a warning that allowed Gandalf to escape capture and ultimately rescue them.
The ring makes him invisible. The dagger is an elven blade and glows in the presence of orcs and goblins.
