Harry's mother wouldn't let voldemort kill harry and protected harry as much as she could until voldemort killed her. When voldemort finally tried to kill Harry Potter he was already protected through the power of love so the most damage voldemort could do was giving harry the thunderbolt shaped scar along with part of himself. When voldemort accidentally gave harry part of himself it drained his power leaving voldemort to vanish until he could regain his strength.

Because Voldemort contains Harry's blood, as long as Voldemort is alive he preserves Lily Potter's charm, so Harry can't die at his hand. Thus, paradoxically, while Harry had to die before Voldemort could, Harry can't die while Voldemort lives. They have a double bond, with Voldemort's soul in Harry and Harry's blood in Voldemort.
