He apparently died of natural causes at the age of 77, on April 7, 1823.

Jacques Charles (1746-1823) was an early pioneer in hydrogen balloons, working with brothers Anne-Jean Robert and Nicholas-Louis Robert. He flew with Nicolas-Louis and passengers on the first manned hydrogen balloon flight on December 1, 1783. Charles' Law is named for him.
