This is really just my opinion, but I think that Katniss gave him back fight. He had given up, let the nightmares take over, drank himself into a stupor. But with Katniss and Peeta he could hope that they stood a chance. Specifically Katniss because he chose her to win since Peeta would do anything to save her.
Later on though, after The Hunger Games are all over, I felt like that impact was gone. He had no friends left, and he didn't even have the responsibility of keeping tributes alive anymore.
Those are just my thoughts though. I was disappointed Haymitch was left like that at the end. I wanted to see a difference there.
