He started off doing vaudeville then went on to Hollywood to become a movie extra. He became noticed for doing his own extraordinary makeup and stood out in extra parts for not only looking completely different in the backgrounds of the different movies but for displaying raw emotion. He was gradually given bigger and better actual roles and always did his own remarkable makeup.
