Elizabeth II, the current Queen of England, was crowned on June 2, 1953 after the death of her father, King George VI.

Her father would not have become king, and she not queen, had her uncle Edward VII not abdicated the throne in order to marry an American divorcee named Wallis Simpson. Edward leaving the throne meant that his younger brother was forced to become George VI.

It is said that George was a reluctant king, he stuttered and preferred home life to public life, though he served his country admirably through WWII. He died in Feb. 1952 of coronary thrombosis. He had developed lung cancer due to heavy smoking and the stress of the war took a toll on his health.

Upon his death, his eldest daughter was next in line for the throne. She is one of the longest reigning monarchs in British history, the current Queen Elizabeth II. Next in line is her son Charles, then his son William. A text of Elizabeth's coronation ceremony is available at the Related Link, Video of the ceremony at the second Related Link (MSN Encarta)
