YES KING RICHARD I 'Coeur de Lion' the LIONHEART RULED 1189-1199 born 1157 & died 1199 was a TEMPLAR CRUSADER & Fought alongside KING LOUIS VII 'le Jeune' the YOUNGER born 1120 & died 1180 & was later replaced by KING LOUIS VIII 'le Lion' THE LION born 1187 & died 1226 who was also a TEMPLAR CRUSADER known to also be called similar 'LION' Nicknames for their Exceptional Bravery in Battle. So yes this was common term that goes back well before then when a Military Leader actually Lead his men into Battle & Not from behind a desk like today
