At the end of the civil war, many soldiers returned home just to find that they were no jobs waiting for them. Many resorted to continue using the violence and their guns as a means to earn a living. Some soldiers also ended up frustrated and could not accept the defeat of the Confederacy, so they rebelled against the North by committing acts of violence and breaking the law. Some authors believe that Jesse James was not really an outlaw, but that he held on to his allegiance to the Confederacy and continue his efforts to finance a follow-up revolt of the South against the northern states. These authors believe that his criminal career was actually a series of fund-raising and guerrilla attacks against US government institutions.

Like Hollywood actors changing their given names to Hollywood names; Jesse James had a "ring" to it. Names sell! What does that mean? Answer Jessee James learned how to shoot and fight on horseback during the Civil War. This may have also shaped his career. Missouri was a state that was divided between the North and South. There were many fights and attacks between fellow Missourians and some committed atrocities. This seemed to have given Jessee James a cause to fight for even after the war ended. He began to rob banks in order to retaliate against those who had wronged his family and friends. However, it turned into greed as he and his gang robbed banks to fill their pockets.
