How did Shirley Temple get discovered?

At the age of three Temple began dance classes at Meglin's Dance School in Los Angeles California. Her film career began when Charles Lamont, a casting director from Educational Pictures, visited her class. An agent for a producer came to her dancing class to see if there were any talented children they could use in a series of movies they were planning. Shirley hid under the grand piano. He saw her there thought she was really cute so talked her parents into letting her go into casting.

Shirley Temple began attending a Mrs. Meglin's Dance Studio when she was three, and one day when she went to dance class, a casting director from the Educational Films Corporation was there to look for potential children to be in several one reeled comedy movies (parodies of famous films with all kid casts). Her mother was not told they would be there, so she was in regular practice clothes, and being embarrassed that all the other girls where so dressed up, went and hid under the piano. A man from the group saw her, thought she was cute, and spoke to her mother. She was paid $10 a day and began her career officially in 'The Runt Page' in 1932. Her big break came in 1932, where she got a role in 'Stand Up and Cheer' for Fox...and the rest is history!
