Sigurd, the legendary hero of Norse mythology and the protagonist of the Völsunga saga, met his end through betrayal. After slaying the dragon Fafnir and acquiring the cursed gold, he was ultimately killed by his half-brother Gunnar, who was manipulated by the sorceress Grimhild. Sigurd was ambushed in his sleep, struck by a spear, leading to his tragic demise. His death is often seen as a culmination of the themes of fate and betrayal that pervade Norse legend.
