It is conceivable in the original sylabbus or pre-plot plan one excuse for a large all-male casrt would have been the situation of a Tramp Steamer ( ship) the lead characters being the vessel"s captain, and three Mates -or deck officers, plus the Cook, Uncle Charley, who was, in the story line a former Merchant Marine commisary man ( cook). the seagoing idea was not taken up- a landlubber plot evolved- but we still had four main male characters., one residual of the planned seagoing Douglas clan- was the name of the family dog- Tramp. Tramp steamers are freighters which work on a contract basis rather than pursuing a fixed port-to-port line like say the French Line, they can carry up to l2 paying passengers without having to book a medical officer. Doctors, understandably, are reluctant to sign on freight vessels! as it is often the keeper of the medicine cabinet on a tramp is of all things the Properties Clerk- who is not strictly speaking a ( Deck) officer of the wheel-house type, who doubles as Pharmacist"s mate- and keeper of the keys- the storekeeper role extends to the drug store- the Porperties man has the keys . needless to say an unpopular job.
