It all depends on how you read it. To me, I started to figure it out when Clarisse tried to dump his head into a toilet. Then, at the creek the first time against half the Ares cabin. For others, it may not be so simple. Trust me. I have read the book at least 20 times (literally).
I've also read the book a lot, and I kinda did see it coming from when the water "grabbed" the kleptomaniac girl at the art museum... and when Percy started getting healed by the river when he was playing capture the flag.
