In the anime, Mamoru/Damien 'died' via Galaxia when she attacked the airplane he was on during the beginning events of the Sailor Stars. His Star Seed (the golden one in the anime) was stolen from him, thus rendering him in a dead coma-like trance.
After the events in the anime, his Star Seed is returned to him at the end, waking him up and successfully 'reviving' him.
