In the generation 4 games, this isn't possible (Although, you can do it in Soul Silver and Heart Gold). But you can take one of a few acceptable Pokemon for a walk in a park in the city where the daycare is (Don't remember the name :P) it is probably the 5th city you'll visit overall. The acceptable Pokemon are Pikchu, Pachurisu, bunny ... something and a few others. The lady at the front of the park says which Pokemon are allowed.
