If you join this and do a few plays with them you may get spotted or, more effectively- build up a cv and post it to the casting director of a show or group!!!!!!! Auditioning for a musical can be a very nervewracking experience. If you have auditions coming up and are nervous or don't know what to do, these tips will be helpful.

1. Once you hear about upcoming auditions, get to work right away.

2. The first thing you need to do is to learn about the performance. Read an in- depth summary of the musical AND of all the characters.

3. Once you know which character(s) you would like to audition for, get to work learning the music and the dialogue that is being used for the audition.

4. PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE. The main part you need to practice is the singing. That's the part the director will guaranteed pay attention to the most. They won't give you the role if the singing is poor, but they can always work on the acting. Watch videos online of other actors\actresses playing the role you are auditioning for and try to be better than them.

5. For practicing the singing, there a few main things you need to do.

First of all, if you don't know the song, it's crucial to look up a copy of the audio online and learn it. The main things the director will be looking for are projection, diction, strength, and that you're hitting all the right notes. Work on all these things and just practice the music as many times as you can until you know it by heart. Then work on putting a little acting into it. Don't be embarassed to put yourself into the music; it's very important to show emotion.

6. It's best to first practice the acting lines alone so you get to know them, but you'll eventually want to practice them with a friend or family member. Try to make it feel as realistic as possible and as if you ARE the character. Put lots of movements and emotion into it. Once again, you can look at video clips of that specific part of the performance and watch how they do it.

7. Practice extra hard the week before the audition. The day of the audition, practice a few times but not so many your voice hurts come time of the audition. DON'T practice right before the audition.

8. When you arrive, stay calm. If it's after school and you're hungry, eat a light snack like a granola bar, but don't load up and don't eat any chocolate. It's hard to sing while you're full and chocolate coats your throat. Be sure to drink lots of water and go to the bathroom. Take lots of deep breaths.

9. Don't show that you're nervous. The director wants to see confidence.

If you are in college, always remember that the point of the college is to teach and educate you, and there will be many people to help with this. When you find out that a play is having auditions in your college, don't be afraid to contact the person directing the play (usually a professor, but sometimes a grad student (rarely an upperclass undergrad) and ask them what they will need you to do to audition. Let them know that you haven't auditioned before and would like to learn how to audition. Your college might even have a class that teaches people how to audition.
