Well it is really hard and it took several times for me to complete it but there is a simple way to do it. Play the mini game several times and try to memorise at which spots the thief v turns around to look, and then it will be a lot easier for you. If this does not work there is another way, many people complain saying as soon as they go up to the waterfall, where the entrance to thief V's hideout is (and usually the rocks are there blocking the entrance) it does not let them go inside, instead it says; you lost him, try again tomorrow night. This is because you are either too close or too far from the thief, or that he turns around to look at you. A simple way to prevent him from running away and spotting you is to stay still and turn around facing the other way, on the last log leading up to the waterfall and wait for 2 seconds, then once he has turned around to look and has started to walk into his hideout you can start to follow him again.
